I am a Business Leader or Manager

Whether you are interested in learning more about social and emotional intelligence for yourself or for your organization, the place to start is with awareness.

Your training and coaching dollars are better spent if you target the key areas for improvement. The Social + Emotional Intelligence Profile (SEIP)® can identify -- with pinpoint accuracy -- your own strengths and weaknesses in 26 distinct competency areas, and ditto for your team and/or organization.

Armed with this knowledge, you can immediately begin a program for improvement in the most critical areas, either through personalized coaching, team coaching, and/or a training tailored to the specific needs of your team or organization.

What you will learn in our programs:

Our transformational programs are designed for managers, executives and leaders in business and corporate organizations, as well as non-profits and government agencies. You will learn:

  • Your own strengths and potential vulnerabilities in social and emotional intelligence (you will receive your own personalized, confidential social and emotional intelligence assessment report), and the impact you may be having on the people around you
  • How to introduce S+EI into your teams and organization
  • How to tap into the wisdom that comes from "listening" to your own emotional intelligence
  • How to work with individuals who struggle with social and emotional intelligence
  • How to use S+EI to improve your own leadership and build stronger alliances with colleagues, direct reports, clients, family, friends and others in your life
  • How to become more aware of your own emotions in the moment as well as those of others, and use that information to manage your behavioral responses more productively (and profitably!)
  • How you can use this information to manage your behavioral responses and manage your relationships more effectively
  • The brain science behind social + emotional intelligence and how that influences behavior
  • How to convert negative emotions into positive outcomes and how to keep it together when there is tension and conflict
  • How to strengthen your communication and interpersonal skills
  • How to become more resilient, intentional and make better decisions in your work, your career and your life
  • How to enhance your personal power, self-confidence, and assertiveness, and how to speak "truth to power"
  • How to manage conflict more productively
  • How to be a better manager, colleague, parent, spouse, even friend!
  • How to read others' and understand the emotions they are experiencing
  • How enhancing your social and emotional intelligence will make you healthier

How the program works:

Corporate Certification Training Program

Designed for business leaders and HR professionals, the corporate certification is a unique offering designed to support organizations as they leverage the influence of social and emotional intelligence to improve employee engagement, interpersonal skill, and global productivity.  With this certification, business leaders can introduce, measure, and improve their organization’s universal social and emotional acumen, by administering, interpreting, and debriefing the Social and Emotional Intelligence Profile (SEIP)®.

The Corporate Certification Program requires completion of a two day, three-hour training program.  We offer this training online with no up front fee.  Participation is open to all members of the leadership team and any employees that may be asked to debrief SEIPs®.

(It is important to not that this certification is distinct from our Coach Certification Course (above), which has a dual impact.  The Coach Certification Course certifies participants to use (administer, interpret, and debrief) SEIPs and trains the Institute’s coaching methodology.  Participants leave the Coach Certification Course with the prestigious designation as a certified Social and Emotional Intelligence Coach® and earn recertification credits from ICF, HRCI, or SHRM.)

Please contact us at info@the-isei.com to pursue our Corporate Certification Program.

Custom-tailored Training Program with 1:1 Coaching

Bring one of our highly-skilled trainers / executive coaches into your organization to present a custom-tailored training program and provide individual 1:1 executive coaching for your key people. To learn more about this option, click here.

On-line, Self-paced Program with Executive Coaching Support

This program is designed to be completed online with the personalized, 1:1 support of your own Social + Emotional Intelligence Certified Coach® .

The first step is to meet with your coach (a phone conference and/or webinar), where you are introduced to the program and given and orientation to the training materials available to you. We also use this phone orientation to learn a little more about you, your current situation, and your interest in learning about this all-important topic.

The second step is for you to take the Social + Emotional Intelligence Profile (SEIP)® so you can learn about your strengths and development needs. This allows both you and your coach to focus your energies where it will do the most good right from the start.

The third step is to develop, with your coach, your own personalized action plan based on the needs identified in the SEIP®, and the fourth is to begin the self-paced program of study using the online videos, workbook, worksheets, reflection exercises, journal exercises and more while at the same time, continuing your regular, ongoing coaching sessions.

Because every individual has different strengths and development needs when it comes to social and emotional intelligence, and because of the self-paced nature of the program, the length of the program varies by individual. That said, behavior change does take time, and the minimum length of time to do this work is six months.

The cost of the six-month starter program is $5,995 and the cost is $850 per month thereafter. If you sign up for a full 12-month program (and remember, behavior change takes time and good, solid, sustained support), the cost is $10,250.

The Business Case for Social + Emotional Intelligence

A great deal of solid, scientific research over the past few years has proven the benefits of bringing social and emotional intelligence into the workplace (or into your own personal development plans) The return on investment (ROI) for S+EI programs has been proven again and again in multiple organizations. For example:

  • Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals introduced S+EI training into a development group, and had a control group which did not receive the training. They wanted to determine whether the S+EI training was cost-effective. The development group which received the training increased their S+EI scores 18% over the control group. But more importantly, the development group that received the training outsold the control group by an average of 12% -- or $55,200 per person per month. Multiplied by the 40 sales reps in the development group, the increase in sales was $2,208,000 per MONTH better than the control group, for an ROI of 600%.
  • At Pepsi, S+EI programs generated a 10% increase in productivity, an 87% decrease in executive turnover (saving $4 million), and had over a 1000% ROI.
  • MetLife's S+EI programs with selected groups resulted in S+EI trained and coached sales people outselling their control group counterparts by 37%.
  • At L'Oreal, S+EI programs brought in $2.5 million more in sales in the first year.
  • At Sheraton, S+EI programs helped increase market share by 24%.
  • The reasons for losing customers and clients are 70% related to a lack of social and emotional intelligence. (The Forum Corporation on Manufacturing and Service Companies, 2004)
  • Even the U.S. Military has embraced S+EI training, coaching, recruiting and hiring. The U.S. Air Force reduced turnover among military recruiters from 50% to just 4% in one year, saving the federal government over $3 million in the first year of the program.

Following is just a partial view of organizations which have benefited from S+EI programs:

The benefits listed above for organizations are both scientifically-founded and striking.

Individual benefits are even more stunning. Research indicates the following statistics for leaders, executives, managers, supervisors (and other individuals):

  • 80-90% of the competencies that differentiate top performance are in the domain of emotional intelligence (Daniel Goleman, Working with Emotional Intelligence, 1998)
  • EI is more than twice as predictive of business performance than purely cognitive intelligence (Gerald Mount in, The Role of Emotional Intelligence in Developing International Business Capability, 2006)
  • Leaders with higher S+EI produce more powerful business results and greater profitability (Steven Stein in Emotional Intelligence of Leaders: A Profile of Top Executives, Leadership & Organization Development Journal, 2009).
  • Turnover at the top of organizations has been accelerating in recent years, and the top career derailers are related to a lack of social and emotional intelligence (Center for Creative Leadership, 2005; Stanford University, 2001)

In fact, the 2005 study by the Center for Creative Leadership found the following issues are the top reasons for executive derailment:

  • Poor interpersonal relationships
  • Single most common factor: being too harshly critical
  • Insensitive and/or demanding
  • Alienating co-workers and direct reports
  • Rigidity
  • Inability to accept feedback about traits they need to change or improve
  • Inability to listen, learn and change
  • Inability to work with others
  • Being disrespectful (demeaning, condescending, belittling, bullying, humiliating others)
  • Being uncooperative
  • Not sharing information, plans or credit

"In my experience emotional intelligence is actually more important [than book smarts] in making a leader." (Jack Welch, past CEO of GE, author, master of the turn-around)

"In the fields I have studied, emotional intelligence is much more powerful than IQ in determining who emerges as a leader. IQ is a threshold competence. You need it, but it doesn't make you a star. Emotional Intelligence can." (Warren Bennis, Researcher, Thought Leader and Author of the international bestselling book, Becoming A Leader)

And the health benefits for enhancing our personal social and emotional intelligence are even more compelling. People with high social and emotional intelligence are:

  • Healthier
  • Experience lower rates of chronic illness
  • Have lower disease risks
  • Have fewer symptoms and less pain when they do fall ill
  • Less likely to have high blood pressure, heart attacks, diabetes, or a stroke
  • More likely to live longer, up to ten years longer!

(Cohen, S. & Doherty, R., Psychological Bulletin, 2005, and Fredrickson, B., Positivity, 2009)

Research also shows the following outcomes of healthy, positive emotions:

  • Improved performance and achievement
  • Greater creativity and innovative problem-solving
  • Better decision-making
  • More flexible thought processes
  • Improved memory
  • Improved hormonal balance

Amazingly, research has also shown that:

  • People with positive emotions earn more over the course of their lifetimes. (Diener, E., Social Indicators Research, 2002)
  • People with positive emotions have more satisfying marriages. (Harker, L. & Keltner, D., Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2001)
